Course Outline

This nationally recognised training course gives participants the necessary skills and knowledge to safely and efficiently operate a small plant & equipment in a range of different working environments.

  • Prepare for operating small plant and equipment
  • Risk management, control procedures and planning work
  • Conduct pre-operational checks
  • Use small plant and equipment
  • Equipment inspection
  • Carry out operator maintenance
  • Conduct housekeeping activities

Requirements & Details

  • Participants must be a minimum of 17 years of age to sit the assessment, and be proficient in English
  • Photo ID, and wear appropriate PPE (Hi-viz clothing, ankle height steel toe boots, hard hat, safety glasses)
  • A short literacy and numeracy test will be required
  • Assessment type: Theory and Practical

Duration

  • 1/2 day including assessment (depending on participants skill levels & previous experience)

Certification

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be issued with;

  • Statement of attainment(SOA) for the unit RIISAM204E – Operate small plant and equipment
  • A wallet sized photo identification card reflecting the achievement.

Course Outline

  1. Plan and prepare for operating small plant and equipment

1.1 Access, interpret and apply operate small plant and equipment documentation to ensure the work activity is compliant

1.2 Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements

1.3 Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures

1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities

1.5 Select and check for faults plant, tools and equipment appropriate for the work activity

1.6 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency

  1. Conduct pre-operational checks

2.1 Select and use fuel and lubricants

2.2 Check and adjust fuel, oil, hydraulic fluid and water levels

2.3 Inspect, secure/tighten and maintain bolts, nuts, guards and attachment couplings

2.4 Check and adjust function of controls and gauges

2.5 Conduct standard start-up and shutdown procedures

  1. Use small plant and equipment

3.1 Identify site hazards associated with small plant and equipment operations and establish appropriate controls

3.2 Identify and apply operating techniques for small plant and equipment to achieve optimum output while maintaining specified tolerances

3.3 Operate machine to produce results within specified tolerances

3.4 Store plant and equipment safely when not in immediate use

  1. Carry out operator maintenance

4.1 Prepare machine for maintenance

4.2 Conduct inspection and fault finding

4.3 Carry out scheduled maintenance tasks

4.4 Process written maintenance records

  1. Conduct housekeeping activities

5.1 Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials

5.2 Clean and maintain condition of equipment, ensure suitability for use, and address/report issues
