Course Outline

This unit of competency  gives participants the necessary skills and knowledge to safely and efficiently cut & core concrete in a range of different working environments.

  • Prepare for operating equipment
  • Risk management, control procedures and planning work
  • Conduct pre-operational checks
  • Equipment inspection
  • Carry out operator maintenance
  • Conduct housekeeping activities

Requirements & Details

  • CPCCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry
  • Participants must be a minimum of 17 years of age to sit the assessment, and be proficient in English
  • Photo ID, and wear appropriate PPE (Hi-viz clothing, ankle height steel toe boots, hard hat, safety glasses)
  • A short literacy and numeracy test will be required
  • Assessment type: Theory and Practical

Duration

  • 1/2 day including assessment (depending on participants skill levels & previous experience)
 

Certification

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be issued with;

  • Statement of attainment(SOA) for the unit CPCCON3047 – Cut concrete
  • Statement of attainment(SOA) for the unit CPCCON3057 – Core concrete
  • A wallet sized photo identification card reflecting the achievement.
  • Refresher training every 2 years

Performance criteria describe what needs to be done to demonstrate achievement of the element.

  1. Plan and prepare to cut concrete.

1.1 Interpret specifications for concrete cutting and clarify requirements with relevant persons.

1.2 Assess work site to determine concrete type, thickness, reinforcement and base type impacting cutting requirements.

1.3 Plan work tasks to comply with relevant legislation, regulations, standards and codes, and manufacturer, work health and safety (WHS), environmental and workplace requirements.

1.4 Select and fit required personal protective equipment (PPE).

1.5 Inspect work site, assess hazards and apply risk controls, including required signage and barricades.

1.6 Select tools and equipment, check for serviceability and rectify or report any faults.

2 Carry out concrete cutting activities.

2.1 Inspect concrete to assess its readiness for cutting and to prevent raveling, cracking and saw damage.

2.2 Conduct required measurements and calculations and mark cutting positions according to specifications.

2.3 Use tools and equipment safely to perform trial cuts according to manufacturer and workplace requirements.

2.4 Cut concrete according to specifications and quality requirements.

2.5 Control dust from concrete cutting activities according to workplace requirements.

3 Clean up.

3.1 Clear work area and dispose of, reuse or recycle materials according to regulatory and workplace requirements.

3.2 Clean, check, maintain and store tools and equipment according to manufacturer and workplace requirements.
